In six years one female dog and her offsprings can be the source of 67,000 puppies.
In theory there is no limit to the number of offspring male dogs can produce.
Thousands and thousands of puppies are born every day in the United States. When you consider that only 11,000 humans are born each day, you can see that there can never be enough homes for all these dogs.
Apart from keeping the numbers down, and ensuring a certain level of welfare for each animal, spaying and neutering your pet can have other benefits as well:
Spaying females can reduce the risk of ovarian, breast, and uterian cancer.
Neutering male dogs can reduce testicular and prostate cancer.
Both procedures can calm the temperament of the dog, especially in males, and make them less aggressive.

49. Make Your Own Dachshund Dog Bed
Here are instructions for making a homemade dog bed with removable washable cover. This will work for any small dog of course.
For an oval shaped Dog Bed you will need:
One Manmade-Foam Pillow
One Pillowcase
Needle and Thread
Non Permanent Pen
Scissors
Velcro or zipper
For a rectangular dog bed, you will need:
One Manmade-Foam Pillow
One Pillowcase!
Looking at the above, you can probably guess just how simple it is. All you do for the rectangular dog bed is put the pillow in the pillow case, although if you don’t want your pet dachshund climbing inside the pillowcase itself, you may want to sew a zipper or velcro on the open end!
And for the oval dog bed, simply punch the corners of the pillow inward (yes, with your fist – pretend it’s your boss or something!) Then turn the pillowcase inside-out, and draw a curve on each corner, until you have an oval shape. Then sew on the line preferably with a machine, but by hand will do, if you can sew small and in a smooth line! Cut excess fabric, zig-zag or handsew the edges for added strength, attach velcro to fasten (it’s easier than sewing a zipper) turn back the proper way, stuff your pillow inside - and voila! Your new Dog bed. Your doxie will LOVE it!

47. Wheelchair Dachshund Inspires Disabled Patients

Hans the dachshund is doing a fantastic job as an unofficial therapy dog for the disabled, and it all happened by accident – literally.
Poor little Hans thought he could jump off the sofa, but ended up damaging his spine so much, he became paralyzed.
His owner Anne works at a rehibilitation center and the patients see Hans in his wheelchair just getting on with life, and are spurred on to get better themselves! It’s truly an uplifting story. Read it Here.

43. Miss Doxie’s Dachshunds

I’ve found a brilliant story about dachshunds at bathtime. It had me in stitches laughing and it is illustrated with an abundance of cartoons to demonstrate fully the frustration and hilarity of such an event.
I’ll have to go back there and read more of Miss Doxie’s site, but for now, go and take a look Here.

42. Dachshund Cross Set To Change The Law

A lovely dachshund cross chihuahua, Henry, is helping a committee decide on whether to make animal torture a third degree felony. This happy little fella was not always such. He was rescued after he had been deliberately burned as a puppy.
Let’s hope they decide in favor of the new bill, and reduce these terrible crimes.

40. Dachshund Prey
It’s a common problem; you’re out walking your pet dachshund, and an eagle swoops down and tries to carry him or her off for dinner.
Do you a) ignore the eagle – after all, it’s obviously hungry, and who are you to get in the way of nature?
b) step in to pull your helpless dog away from the clutches of the bird, and risk being ripped to shreds yourself in the process?
or
c) try to ward off the predator with your umbrella / walking stick whatever you have in your hand?
C’mon guys, there’s no contest what you’d do. I would never condone hurting any animal, but when one animal is attacking your dog, hey – he’s the enemy here!
This poor old guy in Germany was just trying to save his dog, by using his walking stick on the eagle, and now he’s been fined $23,000 for his trouble.
The eagle was rare. Yeah, like he knew that, or even cared, as he watched his dog get attacked.
And the eagle had escaped from a widlife centre. Shouldn’t THEY be fined for allowing the bird to escape? But they are only paying $780 towards vet bills for the dog owner!
I mean, if your dog attacks a person, it’s the dog that gets destroyed and the owner fined, not the person who defends the person being attacked!
It’s all bananas!

35. The 78 cent Dachshund

They say that love of money is the root of all evil, but did you know that it can be lethal to dogs? One dachshund is very lucky to be alive after swallowing several coins, not because they caused an obstruction, but because the metal caused a severe allergic reaction in the one year old dachshund’s body. The poor little thing was very sick before the vet pinpointed the problem.
Coins sicken dachshund
“See a penny, pick it up, all day long, you’ll have good luck” — an expression that doesn’t apply to dogs.
By Kathy Aney
of the East Oregonian
PENDLETON - Peabody was one sick puppy.
In January, the black-and-tan dachshund got to the threshold of death's door before an astute veterinarian figured out what was wrong and pulled him back from the brink.
The problem? Seventy-eight cents.
Three quarters and three pennies were lodged in Peabody's stomach, sending his tubular body into hemolytic anemia, a condition where the body's own red blood cells are being destroyed. Zinc and copper leaching from the pennies triggered the hemolytic anemia and the dog began to bleed internally.
But nobody realized that at the time. His owners, Dan and Lorie Emert, just knew that Peabody wasn't himself.
"He was lethargic and roasting hot - his skin felt really tight," Lorie said.
She and Dan rushed 1-year-old Peabody to the Pendleton Veterinary Clinic, where veterinarian Fiona Hillenbrand examined him.
"It was a classic case of hemolytic anemia," Hillenbrand said.
Diagnosis was the easy part, however. Finding the cause and treatment would be more difficult. Hemolytic anemia can be triggered by numerous causes: infectious diseases, snake or spider bites, ingestion of onion or garlic and many other causes. Zinc and copper poisoning is quite a ways down the list.
One of Hillenbrand's partners, David Bowman, said most vets wouldn't have zeroed in on the cause as fast as Hillenbrand, if ever. Usually, he said, veterinarians don't X-ray hemolytic dogs as a matter of course.
"It's not all that uncommon to be presented with hemolytic anemia and almost all of those are autoimmune - the animal becomes allergic to its own tissue," Bowman said. "Dr. Hillenbrand came up with the right questions."
Hillenbrand ticked off a list of causes to the Emerts, hoping one would get a reaction. When she asked if Peabody could have eaten any money, Lorie had a sudden memory.
Some coins had fallen out of Dan's suitcase after a trip. Peabody picked them up with his mouth and ran under the bed with them.
"Dan pulled a quarter out of his mouth," she told Hillenbrand.
Hillenbrand quickly did an X-ray. The money lit up like a neon sign.
"There was a stack of coins in his stomach," said Hillenbrand. "They were just stuck in there."
Peabody went into surgery and Hillenbrand removed the six coins. Peabody, however, wasn't out of the woods yet. Blood work showed that his kidneys and pancreas were involved and in danger of shutting down.
A blood transfusion pepped him up and, slowly, he improved. Hillenbrand heaved a sigh of relief.
"This is an incredibly lucky dog," she said of Peabody. "One penny in a 10-pound dog is a lethal toxic dose."
Since the case is somewhat unusual, the Washington State University vet school asked for copies of his file, blood work and X-rays as teaching tools.
Lorie has only praise for Hillenbrand.
"She was absolutely amazing," she said. "It was uncharted territory for everyone - she was incredible."
Lorie said the 78 cents won't go far in paying the hefty vet bill, but she is overjoyed that Peabody beat the odds.
"It's totally a miracle that we have him," she said. "He was so sick."
