In six years one female dog and her offsprings can be the source of 67,000 puppies.
In theory there is no limit to the number of offspring male dogs can produce.
Thousands and thousands of puppies are born every day in the United States. When you consider that only 11,000 humans are born each day, you can see that there can never be enough homes for all these dogs.
Apart from keeping the numbers down, and ensuring a certain level of welfare for each animal, spaying and neutering your pet can have other benefits as well:
Spaying females can reduce the risk of ovarian, breast, and uterian cancer.
Neutering male dogs can reduce testicular and prostate cancer.
Both procedures can calm the temperament of the dog, especially in males, and make them less aggressive.
