144. ‘Deer Perfume’ sniffing Dachshund

Here’s Maggie – aint she cute? She greets clients at Jake DeBlieck's barber shop on Main. And she especially likes the hunters who smell of dead deer – lovely!

143. Winnie The Winning Weiner!

Eight year old dachshund Winnie has won the hearts of people who voted her the Number One Calendar Pin-up Dog in Longview News-Journal's second annual online Pet Star Calendar Contest.

Brave little Winnie’s owner Janet died on November 6th, so she didn’t get to see Winnie become Calendar Girl. Winnie had fallen from a tall porch four years ago, and broken her back. It took six months for her to walk again using her unique custom-made wheelchair.

140. The Term ‘Hot Dog’

Here’s a link to the possible history of the phrase ‘Hot Dog’ – but read it carefully though, it is talking about two sausages, and not two live dachshunds!

138. More Dachshund Art

Found this on etsy.com where there are tons of dachshund art by lots of talented folk. It was difficult to choose a favorite, but as I love lots of color, this had to be the one.

It is called Murphy The Dachshund, and is by Rebecca Collins (artpaw) who has her own site at Artpaw.com

If you are creative and are wondering how to sell your images online, Etsy might be a good place to start.

137. The Correct Dachshund Bag!

This is the kind of thing I was after! Lots of different colored little doxies pictured end to end.

Although I wonder if any of Mary Lynn Blasutta’s designs ever made it onto a bag. I love her dachshund designs, as you may have read!

136. To Carry A Dachshund

I put a search in Ebay for Dachshund Bag as I wanted a nice stylish dachshund shopping bag, but this is one of the things I found!

That pink creature looks more like a lamb than a dachshund, but it made me chuckle anyway!

135. She Worked Hard For The Dachshund!

Nine year old Corryl saw last year’s Wiener Nationals and vowed she would get her own dachshund and train it to win races.

She pleaded with her Dad to let her have one, and he only gave in after she read a whole book allowed to him about caring for the breed, and when she agreed to pay the $300 herself by doing lots of extra chores. She was holding lemonade sales and selling lots of stuff. She baby-sat friends’ pets and even washed their dogs in her yard!

And now she has her beloved pet Roxanne she isn’t going to forget her vow. Roxanne is being trained by perfectionist Corryl.

You HAVE to read this story if only to find out how involved her parents are in making sure their children are stimulated and learn the value of money. Corryl is a true entrepeneur!

134. Dachshund and Kitten Family

Lillie the Surrogate Mother to kitten Tahoe has really made headline news all over the world, but I notice this report tells exactly the same story except that the cat is now a girl, not a boy!

133. Largest Number of Racing Dachshunds

On Saturday July 14, 87 dachshunds will race 50 yards at Los Alamitos Race Course for the 12th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals, raising money for the Seal Beach Animal Care Center, a charity that finds homes for stray animals in Orange County.

The winner will receive a Wienerschnitzel crystal dog collar pendant, and their owner will win $1000. They will also be able to compete in the finals at the Holiday Bowl Big Bay Balloon Parade at Christmas.

132. Dachshund Feeds Kitten

We reported a few months ago the story of a mother cat who nursed dachshund puppies. Now we found a story of the other way round!

This is quite remarkable! Tahoe was named because his new owner found him in the engine of her Chevy Tahoe, after she’d been driving around for a few minutes and heard meowing!

Then the new owner’s long haired dachshund Lillie was spurred into a false pregnancy and started producing milk after she saw that Tahoe needed a Surrogate Mother.

129. Dachshund Clubs and Events

As it’s summer, there are tons of dachshund events popping up all over the country, such as the events held by The San Diego Dachshund Club, photographed here by Lea Achivida, the club’s photographer.

I am however a tad confused by the dates shown, as all the photos and comments on her Fotopages page seem to jump from 2004 to 2010!

Maybe Lea and her dachshunds are expert time-travellers as well!

128. More Dachshund Art

I’ve seen Mary Lynn Blasutta’s work before but I didn’t know just how many dachshunds she has featured until now. She has been illustrating ad campaigns, book covers and magazines for over 25 years. She often has dogs in her work. Other favorite breeds she uses are poodles and Scottish terriers. I love her retro style.

See lots of her work here: http://www.blasutta.net/

She clearly loves shoes too!

126. Weemee And Dachshund

Over at Friends Reunited they have added lots more features to the weemees. When I first joined there were only a few hair styles, tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories. And there was only one type of dog – which was no particular breed.

But now there are lots of recognisable breeds, and I’m delighted to see a black and tan dachshund in there!

When I work out how to put it on my blog properly you’ll see the animated version with the dogs tongue sticking out! But for now you’ll have to settle for the screen capture jpeg.

125. Dachshund Weighed Down With Tags

I found an interesting story about a little dachshund who works as a therapy dog, and her owner Gail Kirkegaad is not in favor of being asked to have a licence for her. Her pet already wears three tags, and Gail says “She's not likely to get lost with one more tag, because she won't be able to move!”

I think therapy dogs should be exempt like other service dogs, such as guide dogs for the blind.

123. Where To List Your Dachshund Event

If you have an event coming up, and want maximum exposure, be sure to let your local newspaper know. Put up flyers in Petshops, libraries, dog clubs, etc.

Then find as many local dachshund related online forums as you can, and post to them to tell them about it.

And don't forget to let local businesses know. Expecially the local Hot Dog trailer! When you are organising an event, local businesses always want some of the action. If there are going to be lots of people there, they will want to make some money.

Use your imagination, and go through the yellow pages - who will benefit from being there?

If you are having an event to raise money for a charity, why not contact a celebrity? Maybe you know of a famous dachshund owner who is willing to help out. The press will know how to find them, or find their agent online.

Good Luck, and you can start by listing your event here at http://www.dachshundgifts.com/events.html

121. Dachshund Diner

Here’s an interesting story about dog friendly restaurants. Many restraurant owners have learned that pet owners in general have a good disposable income, and of course they treat their pets as well as their children. So it makes sense to some of them to allow pets into their establishments, and it is not harming their profits either.

120. Firefighters Save Dachshund

Thanks to an equipment donation by the Lexingotn Kennel Club to the Fire Department, the life of a dachshund named Rooney was saved on Wednesday morning.

Because he had inhaled a large dose of carbon monoxide, he needed to be given pure oxygen as soon as possible. He is still undergoing treatment, but is expected to make a full recovery.

119. Dachshund Art

Here’s some of my own artwork from a photo I took of 1 year old miniature dachshund, Gemma.

She got the canine equivalent of ‘Red Eye’ which is ‘Green Eye’! So I put her for a spin in Photoshop. Actually I thought she looked cool with emerald neon pupils so I'll publish the original.

Then I got a bit carried away and went for a pop art look. I’m trying to make a dachshund logo that hasn’t been done before, and this is a different position to most dachshund logos. Still needs more work though.

117. Dachshund in Wizard of Oz

The part of Toto in The Wizard of Oz was originally meant to be played by a dachshund named Otto. He was owned by Margaret Hamilton who played the part of the Wicked Witch of the West in the film.

The above photo of Dorothy and Otto was shot from unreleased footage of the film, where Dorothy sang ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. They re-shot this scene after the studio fired Otto, and the original footage was never shown.

He was replaced because dachshunds were believed to have come from Germany, who were the enemy at the time.

At this website they say that dachshunds originated from Africa. I really don’t know, as nearly source I have found says they come from Germany. The site also gives more information about other dachshunds in the movies.

114. Mocha The Dachshund

Over at wienerdogs.org they have a Featured Dachshund section where they invite visitors to send in photos of their pet dachshunds, and they pick out their favorite ones. They picked Mocha this time, and as a professional documentary photographer, this is what makes a perfect photo for me.

It is just as good as any professional shot; almost everything’s in shade except the subject; it has clutter, which makes it more ‘real’ than a lot of staged pro shots; it’s of a goreous dahchsund!

So there you go – slightly biased! But I love this photo

Twelve dachshunds have been found neglected and abused so badly that they don’t even have any fur. They all had infections and are now being cared for by Dachshund Adoption, Rescue and Education (DARE).

If you were sold a ‘pedigree’ dachshund but aren’t convinced you weren’t ‘had’ now you can find out for sure. DNA testing for dogs will tell you exactly what breeds make up your dog.

109. Slinky The Dachshund

Well Slinky in the film Toy Story 1& 2 was a dachshund of course, and the following site claims that you can buy him:

http://www.funforalltoys.com/products/just_for_fun_3/slinky_dog/slinky_dog.html

But I’m not convinced it’s really Slinky. I think he’s an imposter! The eyes, eyebrows, legs and tail are different. Maybe there were copyright issues, but then again, they still called it Slinky Dog.

And who on earth would attach the leash to the poor little thing's FACE? For heaven’s sake!

107. Flying Dachshunds

Hard to know who to credit for this picture. It does say at the bottom but I can't read it. It was taken at Belgrade’s Fall Festival but I don’t know what year.

I got it from http://www.naturescornermagazine.com/NaturesBlog/archives/2006/02/index.html so that’s who I’ll credit, although they do not say where they got it from. The same writer Sue reports at the top of the page the story of a bird who was a witness in a divorce trial, and it makes compelling reading but again, no source. So I can’t verify that it is true.

I hate that!

But never mind, enjoy the airbourne dachshunds. Let me know if you know who took the photo.

106. Dachshund Purse

Here’s a photo of a dachshund purse, which believe it or not I’ve had to enlarge myself! Sadly the people aren’t too hot on marketing, and are losing out by having teeny tiny photos of their products. They should be utilising the website so customers can see what they have on sale.

It’s a shame because they could be quality products, and they do have links saying ‘Click to enlarge image’ – but the links just show the same tiny images – Duh!

I emailed them and let them know, but I’ve done that before for people, and instead of taking it for what it is; a bit of common sense business advice, some people don’t like to be criticised. Let’s hope they welcome the suggestion.

104. Yard Sale Dachshund Update

In post 99 I wrote about the man who sold the dachshund at his yard sale, when it wasn’t his to sell.

Well, poor little Kringle still has not been found, but the man who sold him now feels remorseful, and has offered to help find him, by putting up flyers around the town.

I still haven’t managed to find a photo of Kringle – I hope there’s a photo on the flyers, or they may not have the desired effect.

101. What We Love About Dachshunds

When asked what they like most about their pets, most dachshund owners say their playfulness. They have always been popular with city dwellers because they tend not to smell like some dog breeds do, so need the minimal baths.

(Actually, a lot of people believe that dogs should not be bathed, as it ruins their coat’s oils. This is only true of outdoor working dogs. Most dogs kept indoors should be bathed or they will stink!)

Other dachshund character traits that owners like about their pets, are intelligence, fun loving, stubborn and demanding!

99. Stolen Dachshund Sold at Yard Sale

I can’t believe this! A man SOLD a dachshund at his yard sale and it wasn’t his dog to sell. He then rang the owner to tell her what he’d done.

What is the matter with people? Clearly he didn’t have any quality items for sale at his yard sale, so he decided to steal a dog to sell.

The black and tan dachshund Kringle managed to slip out of his collar and got free, and now his owner is heartbroken. Read the full story here:

If you are having the same problem as Ann in Ohio, whose dachshund puppy is peeing indoors, then read this article, as she got a great reply from Connie Bloom. I happen to know that her techniques work, as I’ve had lots of success with many puppies using almost identical methods.

93. Dachshund Reporters

Here’s a funny piece I found that Jonathan Maziarz wrote on dog translation and how a reporter aims to find a solution to the problem of being under-staffed.

I have to diisagree that dachshunds only have four emotions though: asleep, awake, hungry and I will take a chunk out of your calf unless you let me roll in that dead moose.

What does he do to his dachshunds to make them wants to take chunks out of his calves? I know he’s only joking, but there are least 18 emotions that I can think of!

91. Dachshund Racing involves wandering aimlessly!

Here’s Frankie. Ain’t he cute?

He’s a runner up competitor, although, not that competitive. But that’s OK, because neither were any of the other contenders! His owners have at least tried to teach him to run in the right direction though, but most of the rest were sat at the starting line for a while before deciding to move. Others rolling in the grass, and looking around, instead of sprinting forward.

Frankie was running back-and-forth across the other lanes before finally running toward the finish line.

But does it really matter? As long as the dogs enjoy themselves, that’s what’s important.

I bet it was funny to watch though!

89. Long haired dachshund

I’ve found some great illustrations of the long haired dachshund at: longhaireddachshundclub.co.uk
They’ve been lovingly drawn by Margaret Turner who knows what to look for when long haired dachshunds enter dog shows. The British organization has members dedicated to continuing the breed standard, and they have stands at the Hound Show and at Crufts every year. It’s a good website, apart from the graphic that attaches itself to your cursor on the home page, but that’s just a personal gripe of mine!

A week or two ago I reported a dachshund who escaped unharmed when a truck crashed into its owner’s fornt room. Now another one, this time a dachshund puppy also escaped death when a school bus crashed into a house.

What’s going on? Have motorists of large vehicles got something against dachshunds or something? Or are dachshunds just extremely lucky at avoiding serious injury?

It sounds a lot of fun, and you’ll be helping a very worthwhile cause. For more details go here: http://www.ssdr.org/picnic3.html

Southern States Dachshund Rescue also have a quarterly newsletter that you can sign up for from their home page. And if you are able to adopt or foster a dachshund, they have a form you can fill in too.

84. Can Dachshund Tucker The Terrible Be Tamed?

Su Lum of the Aspen Times tells of how Tucker bullies two miniature dachshunds here at:

http://www.aspentimes.com/article/20070411/COLUMN/104110029

I guess the moral is patience and perseverence. This seemingly little monster liked to attack puppies, and one thing I know about all dogs is that they do not attack for no reason. Tucker found puppies to be a threat. Why, we don’t know, but prove there is no threat, and you solve the problem.

All dachshunds, all dogs, and all people are good inside. It’s just fear that makes us behave badly.

83. Bernie the dachshund cross needs a home

If you live in or near Montecito California, and would like to give a much needed home to Bernie, a 5 year old Dachshund / Jack Russell Terrier mix, then please contact the shelter at the end of this post to fix a time to visit him.

Bernie was overweight when he first came to K9 PALS but was very seet natured and energetic, and got along well with children, cats and other dogs. As you can see, he looks fantastic now. Could he be the next best thing to happen to you?

For more information on adopting Bernie, stop by or call K9 PALS, at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter, 5473 Overpass Road, off Patterson Avenue, 681-4369.

82. Dachshund Puppies Didn’t Make it

Sadly, the two dachshund puppies that were fostered by a surrogate feline, died on Monday. They ended up having a second cat Maud attempt to feed them, but they just weren’t strong enough.

I hope their mother is a lot more fortunate, and survives her terrible ordeal. She has a lot of people rooting for her. Read the full story here:

81. Wire Haired Dachshund

When I was little, my Uncle George used to have a wire haired dachshund called Dylan, but people used to look at me like I was funny, when I told them what breed he was. One woman said in a very snotty voice to her daughter as they walked off “I hate it when owners don’t even know what dog they have…” She clearly wanted me to hear, and I wanted to shout after her that it was she who was ignorant, but I didn’t. Well, she wouldn’t have beleived me, for a start!

Because the wire haired dachshund is the least common of all the dachshunds, lots of people don’t even recognize it as being a dachshund. Most people thought he was a schnauzer puppy even when he was 12! Dylan was the softest thing you ever saw. He was so gentle. I wish I had a photo of him, but he used to look a bit like this wire haired dachshund, Rupert, that I found at petsplace.co.za

80. Sick Mother Dachshund Gets Help From a Cat

Miranda the dachshund, is one of 31 dogs recently taken away from a Union Grove dog hoarder. 27 dogs were discovered on March 25 crammed into dog carriers in a locked storage unit, covered in feces and without food or water.

Later their hoarder, Susan A. Ball of Union Grove, Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, gave up four more dogs that she had in her home.

Many of the dogs in her possession were dehydrated and malnourished, including pregnant dachshund since named Miranda after the Sex and The City character by care staff. Ball was charged with four misdemeanors for her animal neglect.

At first staff thought Miranda’s unborn puppies were dead. But “Then somebody thought they felt some movement, and she got very sick” said Jody Halladay, the senior humane officer and animal services director at Countryside, 2706 Chicory Road.

On Monday night Dr. Tom Mano at Racine Veterinary Hospital, 5748 Taylor Ave., carried out a Caesarean section on the dachshund, and two female puppies survived.

But their sick mother was not well enough to care for them. That’s where Krissie the former stray cat stepped in to help.

Krissie had been brought to Countryside, then moved into a foster home with Jim and Joyce Bates of Mount Pleasant, who shelter dogs and cats for Countryside almost constantly.

Krissie was also pregnant. Her three kittens are now just over a week old.
And on Tuesday, the Bateses introduced Miranda’s two pups to Krissie.

The Bateses rubbed kittens against both puppies to give them the same scent. Then after placing the kittens back, they added the puppies.

Amazing! The heroic mother cat is now nursing her three kittens and Miranda’s two puppies.

But what about Miranda?

She is extremely underweight, debilitated in several ways and still undergoing the stress of birth. On Friday she was still extremely sick, not eating and only on intravenous fluids, said Liz Dahlstrom, the practice manager at the vet hospital.

But if Miranda recovers, the clinic’s staff may be reluctant to give her up to Countryside and adoption for a while, as they’re all very attached to her.

Dahlstrom said “When the dog came over here, everybody fell in love with her”.

Let’s hope Miranda pulls through. I get so angry when animals needlessly suffer like this.

78. Dachshunds nearly gets run over – in her own home!

On Monday night, an elderly lady sat in her living room, cuddled up in front of the TV with her pet dachshund Cleo, when all of a sudden a truck crashed into her house.

Amazingly, it was a wooden bar that her late husband built that possibly saved hers and Cleo’s life.

And more amazingly, Evelyn Sechrest forgives the young driver who was showing off in front of his friends, by trying to perform a skidding stunt. I wonder if Cleo forgives him though! Poor little thing.

Read the whole story at: http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/local/states/california/17024642.htm

The thing that made me laugh, was when on TV’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Heather Mills and her partner were about to take the stage, when Mrs Sechrest heard a “deafening rumble and boom, and the living room wall exploded inward”. I didn’t realise Heather's dancing was quite that bad.

77. Dachshund Bed Hog

You need to buy the Chilly dog bed below when this begins to happen (above!)

Where the dog literally comes between you and your spouse. I love this painting on the china plate of the Dachshund Bed Hog, by Gary Patterson – they DO lay exactly like that, don’t they? Priceless!

I also like extra little details such as the pictures on the wall, indicating that doxies are so long, they won’t fit onto just one picture!

Please feel free to leave a comment anywhwere on my blog - I'd love to hear from you!

76. Mini Dachshund Dog Bed

'Chilly Dog beds' as they are known, are quality pet beds for small dogs who love a snuggle bed. The Chilly Dog bed is a washable, warm, and portable pet bed with a built-in blanket.

How suggley is this dog bed? It’s like a luxury sleeping bag for dogs, and as modelled in the photo, we have a lovely dachshund Maggie showing off with her Chilly Dog bed available from chillydog.com

75. A Non-Dachshund Owner’s View

I’ve found an article written by a student about some of his observations of dog owners, in particular dachshunds.

“I have been a pizza delivery boy on and off for about four years now. And most of the time I can say it's a simple enough job. I get paid to drive around and eat free pizza. It's perfect, except that some people own dogs.

Firstly, dog owners act like a different breed altogether. Dog owners are used to shouting at their pets, having barking fits occur whenever the doorbell rings and picking up poop in little plastic bags. And the smaller the dog, the more dog-related memorabilia they buy. If you own a Great Dane, then your neighbors may not even know it exists. But if you own a dachshund you might be in the running for owning the third-largest collection of dachshund -themed knick-knacks in the United States.

Only the other night, I delivered a pizza to a nice family with a love of dachshunds. I could tell this because of the personalized vanity plates reading DACHSHUND or how about the sign reading, ‘This PAW-perty is protected by Weiner dog security system’. I rang the doorbell and was greeted by the smallest, but bravest dog I think I have ever seen. The owner turned up, grabbed the little dachshund and opened the door offering a little bit of wisdom: ‘Don't worry, he's more bark than bite’."
