“Pet Idol winner finishes road to recovery
From being found on side of road unable to walk to contest champion

TERRE HAUTE — When veterinarian Michael Staub began caring for Reba, a 5-year-old miniature dachshund, the dog couldn’t walk and suffered from a fractured hip and pelvis.

Reba had been found last Aug. 8 on the side of an Edgar County, Ill., road — filthy, hungry and fearful. Staub, a veterinarian at Honey Creek Animal Hospital, believed Reba had been hit by a car or seriously abused.

Because of the extent of her injuries, “I almost was going to put her down … but I couldn’t do it,” he recalled.

Instead, he called Sandy Haggart, a dachshund lover who had participated in dachshund rescues and transports, and who has owned several of them as pets. Staub asked her to foster the abandoned dog until it could stand and walk again.

Between Staub’s veterinary care, and Haggart’s tender loving care, Reba became a survivor.

And now, Reba — so-named by Staub’s staff because of her beautiful red coat (after red-haired Reba McEntire) — is the Tribune-Star’s 2007 Pet Idol contest winner. Reba received 5,331 votes, although Haggart admits she recruited friends, family and co-workers to vote.”

71. Dachshund Balloon Gift

I’ve been unable to find a dachshund Easter Egg so far, but I shall keep looking. If I don’t find one though, I will settle for this dachshund balloon available from Amazon UK, and tie it to an appropriate Easter Egg.

I also know a lady who decorates eggs with people’s names written in icing. Maybe if I gave her a template of a dachshund shape, she could draw it in icing too.

70. Miniature Dachshund Survives Fire

Chester, an 18-month-old miniature dachshund survived an accidental stove fire that engulfed his home on Friday morning, thanks to firefighters who rushed him to the local veterinarian.

Sadly Chester's brother, Sparky, died.

Fire Marshal N. Reed Gustafson said of Chester "I knew he was going to be OK because when I turned the siren on, he started to howl,"

Emergency medical technician Peter Mendlinger held onto the cage as Gustafson drove. It was the first animal rescue for Mendlinger, a 14-year veteran EMT.

"A rescue is a rescue. You want to do what you can to save a life, any life," he said.

About 30 firefighters from the Colchester Hayward Volunteer Fire Department, Bozrah, Salem and Gardner Lake went to fight the blaze. Six firefighter cadets who were in school at Bacon Academy also went to the scene.

69. Long Legged Racing Dachshunds

As if Puppy Mills weren’t bad enough now dachshunds are being targeted by unscrupulous puppy farmers who want to make a lot of money out of producing racing dachshunds.

As absurd as it sounds, the wonderful dachsie breed we all know and love for it’s long body and short legs, is now being bred with longer legs so that they can race faster.

That isn’t all. These longer legged weiner dogs are being raced at greyhound tracks, and we all know what an abusive industry that is, slaughtering thousands of animals every year. So these poor dachshunds are also party to the abuse of another breed because the track owners are profiting.

The racing dachshund owners are profiting from wins, and their greed is escalating the practice of breeding these ‘super’ dachsies.

Please always buy your dachshund puppies or ANY puppies from a reputable breeder.

Thankfully the long legged dachsie in the photo above was not bred for racing. She is half dachsund and half border collie (we think!) - my two favorite breeds – so my perfect dog then!

68. Addictive Dachshund Cartoon Game

Every now and again, I get sidetracked when I should be researching what dachshunds are getting up to in the world, but when you find an archive of excellent cartoons such as those at notinmybackyard.com, it’s almost impossible to tear yourself away.

And when you finally do, you discover a game that is equally addictive! But the chances are, if I’ve just spent 15 mins playing a game on a dachshund site because it’s great, then you’ll probably love it too!

(I loved it because I won every time except once, when I wasn’t concentrating enough!)

Wow! How cute is that dog? He's so playful. I love the way the TV station put in the transcript: "Jake: Oooooooo (roughly translated)"!

In my opinion, he knew people's voices came out of the phone, and he just wanted someone to talk to!

66. Miniature Dachshund Dies after Eating Contaminated Dog Food

A lovely miniature dachshund called Sparky died after his owners changed his food, as he was becoming more and more choosy over food. But shortly afterward, he began vomiting, and ended up, not being able to keep any food down.

Celeste and Bob, Sparky’s owners had to take him to three vets before they found he was suffering from irreversible liver failure, and had to be put to sleep. Then they heard there was a recall on all Nutro dog food, and naturally believe it was the pet food that killed him.

An ingredient from a new supplier is believed to be the cause for the recall. When any company starts using a new supplier, it’s to make improvements to the company, usually to save money.

I don’t believe in giving pets ANY commercial pet food. What doesn’t kill them quickly, is killing them slowly.

In my opinion, if it ain’t fit for humans, it ain’t fit for dogs. Give your dachshund the best food you can, and add years to his or her life (and save on vets’ bills!)

64. Doxie Custody

It is an ever increasing phenomenon that warring couples are battling to keep custody of their dogs, when they split up or divorce.

Because pets are not recognised in law at all, like children are, lawyers are having to come up with solutions such as determining which ‘parent’ the pooch goes to when called. But that doesn’t stop the couples resorting to some very underhand tactics, such as rubbing dog meat on their hands.

I suppose for dachshund owners (underhand tactics aside), the one who will allow them to sleep on the bed is always going to win!

I’ve made a ‘lens’ on Squidoo called Dachshund Trivia, so I’ll be posting stories and trivia up on there too, plus there are added dachshund resources, if you scroll down the page, or lens rather! Being a photographer, lens has a very different meaning in my world! To me the ‘lens’ on Squiddo is a profile, but there you go; each to his own.

I’ve yet to find out all that the site does, but I’ve already found lots of other interesting lenses created by other people. The main benefit though is to spread the word on whatever topic your lens is about, and gain lots of visitors to your site or blog. 61. Famous Dachshund Owners

Queen Victoria loved Dachshunds, Kaiser Wilhelm II’s dachshund was buried beside him, and Queen Margrethe, of Denmark, appealed for help when her dachsie Zenobie, went missing, and thousands of her subjects searched forests waving sausages, but sadly he was never found. Napoleon Bonaparte, J.D. Salinger and Plato also loved the breed.

Picasso’s dachshund, Lump, is said to have inspired his work, and David Hockney’s dachshunds have featured in his paintings.

60. P.G. Wodehouse's Dachshund Bertie

In the last days of P.G. Wodehouse's life, he and his dachshund Bertie were inseparable. Bertie died from natural causes shortly after Wodehouse's death, as often happens. It is believed that Wodehouse's character Bertie Wooster (manservant Jeeves’ boss) was named after his dog.

57. Stolen Dachshund Finds Her Way Home

Almost a year and a half after a young dachshund disappeared, she has now been
reunited with her delighted family.

In October 2005 Ruthie an 8 month old dachshund, was sitting on the back seat of the family car in Long Island when her owner Nancy Noel stopped to go into a store.

But when she returned to the car only moments later, Ruthie was gone.

The police were contacted, and fliers were put up arouind their neighborhood, but all to no avail.

But last week she was seen roaming around the Bronx by a good samaritan who dropped her off at a shelter in Manhattan.

Luckily Ruthie had been microchipped, and workers at the shelter were able to contact her family. Now 24 months old and 10 pounds heavier, her family never thought they’d see her again, but are over the moon she’s back home.

The moral of this story? Ruthie would never have found her way home if she wasn’t chipped – So always get your dachshund microchipped!

56. Photography Ban on Beaches

After yesterday’s report on possibly banning photography in the UK, many beaches all over the world are reviewing their photography policies, in order to protect children.

Sydney Australia have tried unsuccessfully to ban photography on beaches, but looking at their criteria, it does say that parents and tourists would not be affected. It just means that guards and people in general are going to be more vigilant in judging people who are taking photographs. I guess all us law abiding citizens who are just photographing the landscape and our beloved dachshunds have nothing to worry about then.

55. Brits May Not Be Allowed To Snap Their Dachshunds

The UK government is trying to pass a law that will heavily restrict photography in public places. At the moment you can photograph anyone or any dog you like in a public place in Britain. No-one is given the right to privacy. But if the law is passed you will have to have an ID card to be allowed the same freedom.

I do not know who will be eligible for ID passes, but how would this affect tourists or parents, or amateur photographers or pet owners? And how would it even be policed what with inconspicuous devices such as camera cellphones?

One thing’s certain, my favourite dog photographers could not have taken most of their best work with such a law in place. I mean they’d never put a ban on oil painting, or sculpting!
