146. Double Tragedy For Tiger Cub Adopted by Dachshund

A nine year old male wired haired dachshund, Monster, adopted an orphaned tiger, at Stroehen Zoo in Germany, but tragically Monster too died in an accident, leaving the tiger without its surrogate mother.

Monster's daughter, one year old Bessie, pictured above with the tiger cub, then took over the mothering the cub after her father was hit by a mail van. The zoo said that although it's not uncommon for dogs to adopt other species, it is unusual for a dog as young as Bessie to do so. The one week old unnamed tiger is twice Bessie's size, but Bessie just "fell in love" with the orphaned predator said Stroehen Zoo.

145. World's Oldest Dachshund

Love this story of Chanel the 21 year old dachsie. It's been recorded by the Guinness Book of Records that she's the oldest dog in the world, but does that mean there cannot be other dogs out there that could be older?

I've heard of plenty of dogs that live to more than 20 years old, and they are the ones fed on a good diet of fresh meat and vegetables instead of tinned dog food.

Wow she looks like Greta Garbo in those shades!

143. Winnie The Winning Weiner!

Eight year old dachshund Winnie has won the hearts of people who voted her the Number One Calendar Pin-up Dog in Longview News-Journal's second annual online Pet Star Calendar Contest.

Brave little Winnie’s owner Janet died on November 6th, so she didn’t get to see Winnie become Calendar Girl. Winnie had fallen from a tall porch four years ago, and broken her back. It took six months for her to walk again using her unique custom-made wheelchair.

135. She Worked Hard For The Dachshund!

Nine year old Corryl saw last year’s Wiener Nationals and vowed she would get her own dachshund and train it to win races.

She pleaded with her Dad to let her have one, and he only gave in after she read a whole book allowed to him about caring for the breed, and when she agreed to pay the $300 herself by doing lots of extra chores. She was holding lemonade sales and selling lots of stuff. She baby-sat friends’ pets and even washed their dogs in her yard!

And now she has her beloved pet Roxanne she isn’t going to forget her vow. Roxanne is being trained by perfectionist Corryl.

You HAVE to read this story if only to find out how involved her parents are in making sure their children are stimulated and learn the value of money. Corryl is a true entrepeneur!

134. Dachshund and Kitten Family

Lillie the Surrogate Mother to kitten Tahoe has really made headline news all over the world, but I notice this report tells exactly the same story except that the cat is now a girl, not a boy!

I don’t know if they just got it wrong, or if they only just found that out!

132. Dachshund Feeds Kitten

We reported a few months ago the story of a mother cat who nursed dachshund puppies. Now we found a story of the other way round!

This is quite remarkable! Tahoe was named because his new owner found him in the engine of her Chevy Tahoe, after she’d been driving around for a few minutes and heard meowing!

Then the new owner’s long haired dachshund Lillie was spurred into a false pregnancy and started producing milk after she saw that Tahoe needed a Surrogate Mother.

131. Awesome Discovery of the Trashed Dachshund

A long haired dachshund called Awesome was happily reunited with his owner after he was found in a dumpster by an anonymous caller.

What is the matter with some people? I'd like to put THEM in a dumpster.

129. Dachshund Clubs and Events

As it’s summer, there are tons of dachshund events popping up all over the country, such as the events held by The San Diego Dachshund Club, photographed here by Lea Achivida, the club’s photographer.

I am however a tad confused by the dates shown, as all the photos and comments on her Fotopages page seem to jump from 2004 to 2010!

Maybe Lea and her dachshunds are expert time-travellers as well!

127. Dachshunds Are Funny

As if we didn’t know! And so are some people who write about them! Here’s a humorous article about the 2007 Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals.

Just a shame there are no photos, but well worth the read.
