29. A San Francisco Dachshund

A few days ago I reported that two of my favorite dog photographers were Elliott Erwitt and Jim Dratfield.

Another of my favorites is Jon (unknown surname) from San Francisco who regularly photographs dogs tied up outside shops around the city, and posts them on his Blog.

Apart from his knack for capturing just the right expression on the dogs’ faces, he always offers great insight as to what he reckons the beasts might be thinking. He has a few photos of dachshunds, but here’s my favorite, above. And here’s what he wrote to go with it:

"With just his eyes and nothing else, this dude attempted to negotiate with me the purchase of an eighteen-foot-tall powered-armor robot battle suit, for purposes unspecified. He seemed unfazed that such a thing did not actually exist. Sometimes it's good that dachschunds don't get any bigger than they do."

28. Dachshund + Poodle = Daxoodle!

Down at Petfinder.com Nira from New York is waiting for a new loving home.
“Nira is a sweet adult dog who was surrendered to the shelter when her owner went intio a nursing home. She is about 8-10 years old, spayed, vaccinated, healthy and sweet as sugar. They thought she was a long haired dachshund, and shaved a very matted coat. But as it grows back in, she really looks more like a small miniature poodle with a long, lean body.”

27. Parker The Talking Dachshund - Video

Here’s a video of a dachshund named Parker. I love to see happy dogs and Parker is certainly a happy dachshund constantly wagging his tail!

Parker’s owner has produced a good video, that has all the right elements:
· The video is not too long
· It has pleasant, happy music (not depressing ballads, like so many dog videos have)
· It has a gorgeous, friendly dachshund
· The dog is clearly responding to the camera very well
· The owner uses subtitles and humor
· The title compells you to watch!

26. Dachshund Property Laws

1. If I like it, it's mine.

25. Day Of The Dachshund

My two favorite dog photographers are Elliott Erwitt and Jim Dratfield. Elliott Erwitt is a legend and I believe the reason I was accepted onto my photography degree course, because he was one of the interviewing tutor’s favorites too! He’s an acclaimed documentary photographer of people and dogs all over the world. He’s photographed every dog breed including dachshunds, but he hasn’t produced a book solely on dachshunds.

Jim Dratfield has. He’s an excellent dog portrait photographer. You’ll love his book ‘Day Of The Dachshund’. Not only is he a great photographer, but the book is very well designed too. I also have his book ‘Underdogs’.

24. From Wolf To Dachshund

I’ve found a short essay about dog evolution and the way dachshunds have been ‘designed’ by man, and how we as a race are responsible for their health problems because of their design.

It’s one person’s opinion of course, and they say that all dogs are descendants of wolves. I can’t help wondering what the time lapse film would look like if it were possible to apply it to every single dog that ever existed from the wolf to the dachshund! And how many years would that have taken?

22. Coast To Coast Dachshund Rescue

If you know of a dachshund that needs to be rescued, contact Coast To Coast Dachshund Rescue at www.c2cdr.org
They are the largest National Dachshund Rescue Organization in America dedicated to rehoming dachshund and dachshund mixes.

Their site will also tell you how to foster, adopt or simply donate to this very worthy cause. They also have a merchandise section with lovely gifts, T-shirts, books and paintings.

21. 2007 Dachshund Calendars

When I started this blog on January 15, I thought it was too late to tell you all about 2007 Calendars, but actually I have had several people contact me since then asking where to buy a good Dachshund Calendar.

I seems that some people have to have them ALL! After all, it’s the photos they’re after and I’m pretty certain they are kept for years to come too!

19. A Dachshund Rescue Story

This story may upset you, but thankfully it has a happy ending. It proves that with a lot of love and care, neglected dogs like Jurgen CAN be nursed back to health.

“Jurgen spent five years in commercial kennel in Missouri. He was imprisoned in a small cage and never allowed out to run. On November 10. 2004 he lost the use of his back legs. He was unable to move. The kennel owner knew that he was injured and left him to lay in his own waste. The urine and feces piled up around and under him burning his skin and causing horrid deep infections. Since he could not move, he could not get to the food or water and became seriously dehydrated. He laid in his waste for eleven days.”

18. Dachshund Health

The main health issue with Dachshunds is due to their long spines in proportion to their short legs.

A common problem is discs that can become ruptured. As stated earlier in this blog, care must be taken to avoid dachshunds using stairs or jumping up onto furniture, to minimise the risk of injury. Dachshunds must never be allowed to become overweight as this puts extra pressure on their spines.

Some Dachshunds can suffer from skin problems, such as lack of pigmentation in their skin or baldness. Regular grooming will keep their coats and skin in tip top condition.

17. Dachshund Dog Walking

Hope you’re all remembering to scoop the poop when you walk your dachshund! It’s best to buy the purpose made bags from pets stores, and not any other kind of plastic bag, as they may not be not as strong, and you could find things a bit messy!

There are lots of pooper scooper devices on the market to make even the most queasy dog walker, scoop the poop with ease.

I personally always have sand with me too, for - how can I put this delicately? - when you cannot pick it up for consistency reasons!

If you ever run out of bags, and you are on a public footpath, then the very least you shoud do, is get a stick and move the poop out of the way of walking boots.

16. Dachshund Racing in California

I love this photo of an airbourne dachshund!

Huntington Beach, California, is the venue for the Dachshund Racing.

“Dachshund Racing or Wiener Dog Racing has not been around for very long but thanks to the creative ad agency for the 1993 Miller Lite television commercial that listed odd possibilities for sports such as The Miss Perfect Face Off, Sumo Platform Diving and Wiener Dog Drag Races, this phenomenon has taken off in a big way. Wiener Dog Dachshund races are extremely popular events—some horse and dog racing tracks break attendance records when the doxies race days and nights are held.”

Read more Here. The article states that some people are concerned that dachshund racing is bad for their backs, but dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers. Surely, that must have involved lots of running too?

The next dachshund races at Huntington Beach, California, aren’t until September 16th but I can’t wait til Sept to show you this photo!

14. Dachshund Training

Shortly you will be able to get comprehensive new Dachshund Training material from a new dedicated Dachshund website. Responsible pet oweners will educate themselves and get hold of dog training literature, but the discerning dachshund owner who only wants the best for their dog, and for themselves, will want exclusive training information that is uniquely for dachshunds.

Dachshunds are not like other breeds, and require a bespoke training regime, that you will be able to download from the new site. Announcements will be made as soon as the site goes live. In the meantime, read a short Article about Dachshund Training Here.

13. Advice For Dachshunds!

If any dachshunds are reading this blog, I’ve found some very interesting advice for you all – just incase you’re not doing ALL of these already!

“Only come when they call you if they maintain eye contact or are less than 40 feet away. Otherwise, act deaf and have some fun. When you are finally forced to come, act abused and put upon.”

Other pearls of wisdom include:

“No chasing people, as it may require work. No exceptions-not even burglars.”

12. Can Dachshunds climb stairs?

‘Yes, but with great difficulty’ is the answer!

Yesterday’s answers mentioned the issue about dachshunds using stairs. The dachshund, of course, especially the miniature dachshund, has tiny little legs and cannot manage normal house stairs, so it’s best not to encourage them to use them.

If you do have stairs you could train them not to go upstairs – yes this IS achievable! Or put a stair gate in place. But when you consider the size they are to the size of each stair, it doesn’t take a lot to work out that it’s the equivalent to us trying to climb a flight stairs that are each four feet high!

11. A Hidden Dachshund Web Page

Recently, whilst researching, I mistyped Dachshund! I know, I know! I should know better! But the amazing thing was I found an article that I would not have found otherwise.

Someone had asked Yahoo Answers ‘How good is daschshund as a pet?’ and they had misspelled Dachshund the same way I did. The answers were interesting, as they all came form Dachshund owners or former owners.

10. A Happier Dachshund Story

I was quite tickled by this entertaining piece by Su Lum in the Aspen Times. Su shares an update with us on the adventures of her two dachshund puppies:

“They just learned how to remove the cover to the dog door - I say "they" but have no doubt that this was Freddie's doing. Freddie is the great escape artist and general entrepreneur, while Nicky is content to enjoy the spoils of the overturned trash can or the flapping dog door.”
